Heather and Nate Entingh sit atop 60 bags of shoes which are paired, tagged, sorted and ready for pick-up. They will continue taking shoes for the next 4-6 weeks for the park fundraiser, Positive Spaces.

Nate and Heather Entingh of Kimball are looking for used shoes, any kind of shoes or boots, this includes work boots, high heels, gym or tennis shoes, any type and any brand, except shoes with wheels. Although used, the shoes must be in a salvageable condition. Nate and Heather are collecting shoes for their fundraiser.

Known as Positive Spaces Shoe Drive the shoes are collected at Beer and Loathing or the laundromat, within the next 4-6 weeks the shoes will be paired, tagged, sorted, bagged and finally a truck will arrive to pick-up the bags of shoes. If 100 bags of shoes are collected, Positive Spaces receives $1000, the bags usually contain only about 25 pairs of shoes.

The whole project started some six years ago while Nate and Heather along with their two sons were walking throughout Kimball. As they walked through Gotte Park they noticed that the basketball courts and other areas needed some attention. Heather said "Parks are where people go first and you need to put your best face on."

So, Heather began searching for a fundraiser, finally discovering the shoe drive. From that time on Heather set up a bank account for Positive Spaces and they began collecting shoes and putting money in the bank waiting for a project associated with the parks.

They have repeatedly worked with the mayor to re-do the basketball and pickle-ball courts and the children's play area. Positive Spaces along with other funds have helped improve the parks and made them a first rate recreational area.

According to Heather, the shoes are re-purposed meaning they are cleaned, repaired, and then sold in developing countries.

So while COVID-19 is here dig deep in those closets and drag out those shoes that are no longer used. The laundromat is open 24 hours a day, so take those shoes to the back room or take them to Beer and Loathing. The shoe truck will be coming to Kimball in a few weeks, Heather and Nate would like to have a 100 bags of shoes.

These Tech Buffs Made Self-Lacing 'Back to the Future' Shoes - menshealth.com

Have you ever gone to tie your shoes in the morning and thought, Man, this is a big ol' waste of time?

Chances are you haven't, but you can't deny that having self-lacing shoes to impress your friends with would be pretty awesome. In a video by popular YouTube channel Hacksmith Industries, the well-known tech crew tackles this classic project: making self-lacing shoes.

You likely know the famous scene from Back to the Future Part II where Marty McFly puts on a pair of sick self-lacing Nikes. The high-top sneakers are completely sick, but not exactly true to life. While Nike actually does sell self-lacing shoes as part of the Nike Adapt line, which is specially designed for people with disabilities and others with limited motor skills, the shoes are controlled with an app, not Back to the Future-esque technology. The brand has invested in self-lacing technology for decades, even releasing self-lacing Nikes modeled after McFly's in 2016. But nothing has really stuck with long term, non-gimmicky application for the average consumer.

In the Hacksmith Industries video, the crew decides to try their own hand at solving the self-lacing shoe problem—and they do a pretty stellar job. The Hacksmith crew fastens five individual laces on one end of the shoe, attaching the other end to a motorized spool. The spool, which is mounted within the shoe, turns when activated by a button, winding the laces to the needed tightness.

The crew decides to put all the tech components in the sole of the shoe, making them completely hidden. Yet, this plan involves a lot of components. Placing all of them in the sole of the shoe damages the structural integrity of the sneaker, leading the crew to design thin metal inserts for the kicks. While the comfortability is questionable, it is effective. After designing a custom circuit board for the shoe, the sneakers are assembled—and actually work.

But don't get too hype to see these shoes on the market. The video is just for entertainment—and no one wants a metal insole anyway.

The 10 Best Pairs of Running Shoes for Guys With High Arches - menshealth.com

Posted: 19 Nov 2020 01:02 PM PST

Picking the right running shoes for your foot's anatomy is critical for successful training. And if you have problems like flat feet, stability issues or high arches, picking the right ones for your feet can be a little tougher than just finding the flashiest pair on the wall of the running store. Those with high arches should be extra careful when it comes to choosing the right model.

So what are high arches?

"Having a high arch is a structural foot type where the arch is elevated more than what is considered normal," says Blake Dircksen PT, DPT, CSCS, Doctor of Physical Therapy at Bespoke Treatments. "High arches are less common than flat feet."

The main challenge people with high arches face are mobility issues.

"If a person has a high arch and a flexible foot, then often the medial side of the foot is a concern," says Dircksen. "Sometimes high arches can put extra stress on the lateral column of the foot (digits 2 through 5), which aren't designed to handle the load of the body like the big toe is."

That's why it's critical for people with high arches to find the right shoe fit.

"The right shoe and/or insert may help mitigate those excessive forces by reducing the impact and spreading the load around," adds Dircksen.

Starting your search for the perfect shoe designed for high arches? Here are 5 tips you should take to find the right pair.

Tip 1: Consider adding an insole.
"
Often times, when we're fitting individuals for shoes who have higher arches, there may be instances where adding an insole to the shoe dramatically improves the fit of the shoe," says Steve Crnic, General Manager at Brooklyn Running Company. "Insoles from brands like Currex or Superfeet, for example, can really help customize the shoe's fit more effectively, and offers a more contoured fit through the heel and arch."

Tip 2: Focus on the laces.
"Look for a lace-up design that doesn't put too much pressure on the top of your foot. Sometimes, with a higher arch, you will want to make sure you have enough volume in the footbed to accommodate your foot more comfortably," says Crnic. "As such, it's important that the lace design allows for more flexibility on top of the foot and doesn't put too much pressure on the instep, otherwise it may cause pain and discomfort, particularly on longer runs."

Tip 3: Pick the shoe that is the most comfortable.
"This is hands down the golden rule for picking a shoe. Even if you've been told you need a motion control shoe—if the motion control shoe doesn't feel right, then go with the other one that was more comfortable," says Dircksen. "Your feet are sensitive! Picking the right shoe is important. Try them on, walk around, do some jumping jacks, hop on the treadmill—take those bad boys for a spin."

Tip 4: Strengthen your feet and train wisely.
"Particularly with high arches, you'll want to be cautious about increasing your running workload too quickly," says Dircksen. "Give the feet time to adapt to each new training stress, and find shoes that are going to impact the feet the least."

Tip 5: Rotate your shoes.
"This is a big one. Have a few different kinds of shoes on hand and rotate through them throughout the week: some with higher heel:toe drops, some with bigger stack heights, some with cushy foams, and so on," says Dircksen. "This variety of shoe types will change the way that you load your body and will reduce the risk of overloading one area of your body too often—often the main culprit behind overuse injuries!"

Neatsy uses AI foot scans to help people find perfect shoes - The Burn-In

Posted: 20 Nov 2020 08:18 AM PST

A startup called Neatsy AI wants to help people find the perfect pair of shoes.

Finding the perfect pair of shoes can be a challenge. Replacing your favorite pair can be even harder. Due to the unique anatomy of everyone's feet, standard shoe sizes don't mean much in terms of comfort.

That's why a startup called Neatsy AI is using machine learning to help people find comfortable footwear. It uses the iPhone's FaceID camera to gather 3D scans of the user's foot and then harnesses the power of artificial intelligence (AI) to predict which shoes would be a good match. Once users find their ideal shoe, the Neatsy app shows them where to buy it.

Finding a Better Fit

Neatsy AI was founded back in 2019 and has made significant progress since then. TechCrunch reports that it raised $400,000 in pre-seed funding to help launch its iOS app. It is now available for some users in the U.S., U.K., Germany, France, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Canada, and Russia. Neatsy is planning to move forward from its soft launch to an official launch in December.

The app itself is fairly simple and works well for users with a compatible iPhone. Of course, the obvious issue is that it doesn't work on older phones or Android devices without Apple's FaceID camera.

For those who can use it, Neatsy's app offers clear instructions and a straightforward foot measuring process. It guides users through the steps before providing an on-screen outline of how to scan their feet. Users need to wear a solid-colored pair of socks to complete the scan. Once it is done, the Neatsy app saves the results and uses them for all future comparisons.

From there, the app's integrated AI analyzes the 3D scan to find the perfect shoe match. Neatsy has built a database of shoes from popular brands like Nike, Puma, Jordan, and Adidas by scanning their insoles. The algorithm also accounts for what material the shoes are made of.

Once the analysis is complete, the Neatsy app rates each pair with a numerical fit score.

Changing E-Commerce

Although Neatsy's AI-driven foot scanning tool is designed for consumers, it also has the potential to revolutionize the e-commerce world. The startup plans to pitch its technology to retailers and online store owners.

Neatsy's CEO and founder, Artem Semyanov, says, "Speaking long term we think that our future is B2B and all e-commerce shops would eventually have a fitting tech, we bet it will be ours. It will be the same as having a credit card payment integration in your online shop."

Meanwhile, the technology could help retailers cut back on costs associated with customer returns. Semyanov notes, "All in all, shoe e-commerce returns vary among products and shops between 30 and 50 percent. The most common reasons for this category are fit and size mismatch."

By addressing the problem of poor fit at the root, Neatsy's solution helps retailers avoid costly returns by getting customers the right size in the first place.

This is a hot technology right now and will only become more in-demand as e-commerce continues to grow. Keep an eye on Neatsy AI and its competitors as they aim to redefine the future of retail.
