Jennifer Lopez' "Girls" - Song Review

Jennifer Lopez is gearing up for her anticipated comeback in 2014 with a surely-lucrative return to the American Idol judges' table and juicy news on her upcoming eighth studio album (Chris Brown duet?). While the dance queen teased the release of "Same Girl" with a music video preview, it seems like plans may be changing as new track "Girls", a collaboration with DJ Mustard has just made its way onto the web.

She may have gotten back on the floor, danced again and lived it up with Pitbull by her side for her last club-ready singles, but apparently the Latin diva is making a shocking change in terms of sound and style. Yes, Jennifer Lopez is bringing back Jenny from the Block in order to give her new music more of a hip-hop flare compared to her dance/pop roots of the last few years. She's giving us urban flavor, she's giving us thicker beats, she's giving us something to listen to with the windows rolled down. Are you ready?

"Girls" is a vast departure from the material found of Love? or JLo's recent greatest hits compilation. We aren't getting another "Papi", no sequel to "Waiting For Tonight". Instead, picture her past collaborations with Ja Rule and LL Cool J and the artist's new music would fit in nicely. There is no loud, upbeat production found on this new effort, we hear Miss Lopez in a laid-back vibe throwing references to spending money in the club, dropping it down and not having a care. "At the end of the night, girls just want to have fun," she sings, calling back the message of Cyndi Lauper's 80s hit.

Taking a page from the books of Rihanna and Beyonce, it seems that Jennifer Lopez is showing a new, tougher side to her delicate pop exterior. The beat on the new release is an infectious, sexy, chill, synth-like moment that truly carries the song as the artist's vocals remain calm, cool and collective. Lopez is showing that she can do much more than the typical Top 40 dance track and still prove to be successful. "Girls" will divide critics, may even divide her fan base, but props to the singer for venturing out of her comfort zone once again.
